Media Stock, great site for UK landscape photographs

Like all photographers, I am always looking for new stock photography Web sites to submit my photographs to. In the hope, of course, that people will enjoy looking at them and might buy. Many stock photography sites not only allow the download of the image file, but also allow buyers to buy prints or posters.

Landscape photography is sadly neglected by the stock photography sites. Indeed, few of the stock photography sites encourage landscape submissions. This is a great shame. Landscape is one of my favourite subjects. I live in a beautiful part of the world with many photogenic locations.

Then, I discovered this great site. Not only does it deal specifically with landscape photography, but it is specific to the UK. So, if you are browsing and enjoy looking at great British landscapes, or if you have a specific location in mind and would like a print or jpeg file, this is the place for you – Media Stock.

And, yours truly is a contributor. I will post some links to some of my English Landscape photographs in due course.

Alberts footbridge, Stamford

Water and bridges make lovely subjects for a photoshoot. The reflections on the water, the contrast between light and dark, the open space over the water – all these features enhance the composition. When you add a pretty bridge, the results can be remarkable.

Albert Bridge is a popular footbridge over the river Welland, leading from Wharf Road on the North bank of the river to Water Street on the south. I am not sure of the history of the bridge, but it has lovely Victorian ironwork and a wonderful light perched on an elegant arch midway across the bridge.

On a beautiful, and hot, summer’s day, I couldn’t resist taking a whole bunch of photographs of this pretty footbridge, from all angles. Here is a selection of some of the results.

Stamford Town Bridge – view from the meadows

Beautiful weekend and took my camera around the wonderful stone town of Stamford. With its lovely mellow stone and unspoiled Georgian buildings, this town is a gem. I was particularly pleased with my shots of the town bridge.

And take a look at the lovingly renovated Victorian bandstand on the Recreation Ground. There are concerts here in the summer.

Rutland Water

Spent yesterday morning at beautiful Rutland Water. Took my tripod and telephoto lens and, despite the strong wind, managed to get some great shots of the lake, geese, boats and the famous sunken church.

Arriving at 8:00 am, the light was low and slanting through patchwork clouds. The natural lighting changed frequently and I had to keep adjusting to changing conditions – but this made the shoot more interesting. The wind ruffled up the surface of the lake and this meant there were no beautiful reflections. Also i experienced considerable camera shake due to the wind and had to seek sheltered spots. I will definitely have to visit again on a calm day.

In the summer, Rutland water can be busy with day trippers, including cyclists doing the round-the-lake route and with dogwalkers, fishermen, etc. Due to the early start, I managed to get the lake almost to myself, save for a few early fishermen.

Carparking was £3 for the day. There are cafes, restaurants and you can hire a bike. Plenty of bird life, especially water birds. The geese do leave their calling cards and you have to watch your feet at times.

Altogether a great expedition to a lovely place! Reminded me of how much I love shooting landscapes in natural conditions.
